“More Than Dream” – the interview

Hi
My friend Matt Gees was at my worship album launch this past Saturday night.
As I was coming down from “the cloud” and gratefully signing some CDs, Matt asked if he could interview me.  Provided I could get hold of a cold drink and a coffee, I was more than happy to.
This is Matt’s interview.  I found it a personally helpful exercise reflecting some more one the More Than Dream journey and how the whole songwriting and songs-for-worship thing has been for me.   Matt does some work with Vision Radio.
To access my album (you could even purchase it – hard copy or download it) go to this link for the CD-in-hand version or to any of iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon for download/streaming.
Check out Matt”s interview. Thanks Matt

On Purpose … a song for moving forward

On Purpose logo

New song! On Purpose is written for a gathering of 350 or so Uniting Church folk from, around Queensland in just a few weeks time on the Sunshine Coast, Australia. It’s called “synod” and once again, I’m one of the worship coordinators and part of the music team. Peter from our church in Brisbane has a great voice – he sings a great vocal for the rough mp3 demo provided. Thanks Pete!

On Purpose started with what I liked as a chord sequence beginning with an A2 chord (for the musos reading this).

Hopefully it will work … there’s a “Coldplayish” coda too, with a few “wo-oh-oh” bits. Could be fun if people pick up on the idea – you know, hands waving from side to side, folks singing at fine voice.

It’s a while since I’ve written a guitar-based song, so let’s see how this one goes, including connecting with key themes of the five-day gathering.

On purpose
In service
With Jesus
Spirit/Kingdom called
With passion
Compassion
With purpose
Lead us, Lord

God in Christ
You call us: be your church
A sign, a foretaste
of your kingdom birth.
“Go, disciple
to the ends of the earth”
Make that difference
for the One you serve

On purpose, in service …

Born of water, spirit
Christ, we’re raised
A holy people called
to sing your praise
Your word, your Word
alive in us always
with joy, love, hope
as we each run your race

On purpose, in service …

Wo – o – o – o …

“songwrite” – video package (take 2!)

songwrite_purpleBG

[sorry for a bit of cross-posting and re-posting]

You will probably be well aware, that just a few weekends ago, I had the privilege along with Sharon Kirk (Presbytery Minister: the Downs) of coordinating and leading the inaugural national Uniting Church songwriters weekend in Canberra: songwrite.

Always room for improvement, but the feedback from this time spent with 30 others from across Australia was resoundingly affirming, as new songs were written, manuscripted and recorded for use in Christian worship.

The Uniting Church Assembly Communications team have just uploaded a short video package of the weekend.  It gives a good feel for what songwrite was (and we believe will continue to be) all about.

on the way … some more

I blogged about this new song of mine last week (?) It’s one I’m really quite thrilled about. Some further thoughts & recapping …

Three not un-related aspects coalesce for me in this song. You be the judge of how they work for you.

The Uniting Church here in Queensland, Australia is on a journey of prayerful discernment, discussion and visioning called Together on the Way – enriching community. This was the theme of the recent UCA Qld synod, during which the song was written … but not shared. Secondly, as a Uniting Church we affirm from the Basis of Union that “on the way Christ feeds the Church with Word and Sacraments, and it has the gift of the Spirit in order that it may not lose the way.” Elsewhere the church affirms that it is a “pilgrim people”. Meanwhile both during synod and the Refuel School of Theology immediately prior, the significant place of Basis of Union para. 3 became very clear to me; in particular the centrality of the crucified then risen Christ in God’s purposes of reconciliation for all creation being realised. “Jesus is … the beginning of a new creation …”

Someone has suggested to me that I should have shared this song – even if incomplete at the time – at synod. They are probably right. I offer it to you.

It’s both an affirmation that it is in the crucified, risen and exalted Christ that we live, move and have our being AND who we are called to be … that we are called to be an Easter, reconciling people … in Christ.

Hopefully in the next week or so, Dale and I can add vocals to the backing track now available.

Shalom,

 DAVID

Hi again

Not sure how well this will come, but with my ftp server down (meaning I can’t upload any files to my Together to Celebrate website), I’m trying a Plan B.  Apologies if it’s hard to read!
