ahhh! there IS another “Cross” song

Hi again.

Advancing middle-age forgetfulness meant that as I shared a new Easter/Crucifixion song yesterday – On the Cross

I plain forgot (until once again things “dawned” in the middle of the night – that this time last year I wrote a simple kid-friendly song called Love You. Here it is:

Arms Open Wide (Build Wider Tables) … leadsheet & YouTube video

OK.
Dale and I have done some more work on our Arms Open Wide (Build Wider Tables) song; drawing on Christ’s John 13:34 “Love one another as I have loved you … ” text as well as the prominent current Lower Fences, Longer/Wider Tables catch-cry.

Arms Open Wide

A new song, with help from Dale, as we travel into 2019, inspired by two pieces of wisdom:

  • Christ’s vital words in John 13:34 – “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another
  • Words from a Sojourners New Years Day reflection that really challenge me for 2019 and beyond

… drawing on that profound slogan about building longer tables, not higher fences, walls or borders.

So, while on holidays and having just GarageBand for iPad and mandolin with me, I’ve written Arms Open Wide. The recording is very scratchy but take a listen. Vocal of this eventually.

“Hear what I’m sayin’ and
Hear what I’m prayin’
You are my disciples
when known by love”
Love in the caring
Forgiving, forbearing
Love ever-giving”
… the Love from You.

So come together
Yes, come together
Come, love together
Arms open wide
Break down the borders and
Build wider tables and
Reach out your arms
stretch them open wide

“Hear what I’m sayin and
Hear what I’m prayin
You are my disciples
When known by love
Each time you welcome
a sister, a brother
You welcome the One
whose life is Love”

So come together
Yes, come together
Come, love together
Arms open wide
Break down the borders and
Build wider tables and
Reach out your arms
stretch them open wide

So come together
Yes, come together
Come, love together
Arms open wide
Break down the borders and
Build wider tables and
Reach out your arms
stretch them open wide
Reach out your arms
stretch them open wide

“The Peter Song” – an ever-evolving/adapting ministry song with kids

Been working on a kids song – The Peter Song – covering six chapters in the apostle Peter’s life in the gospels. Haven’t even touched Acts. Where once it was 3 1/2 minute marathon (completely non-kids-applicable) … I’ve now edited it right down, with each iteration just tackling two of the six segments.   Really, the verses are quite interchangeable. The pattern is simply this:

  • one verse
  • another verse
  • bridge
  • reprise one of the two earlier verses 🙂

Enjoy!   Blessings, David

backing track mp3 (shorter version)

Here’s the leadsheet for download. As per leadsheet here are three sets of lyrics:

  1. Peter
    Peter loves fishing
    Peter loves fishing
    By the sea
    Jesus
    Jesus says, “Peter”
    Jesus says, “Peter,
    Follow me”

2.   Peter
Peter is sinking
Peter is sinking
Water deep
Jesus
Jesus says, “Peter
Peter, have faith in
Faith in me”

Oh Jesus
You are Lord, You are God
You are Saviour, Friend
Jesus you love, forgive
You love, you live
I’ll follow you to the end!

  1. Peter
    Peter loves fishing
    Peter loves fishing
    By the sea
    Jesus
    Jesus says Peter
    Jesus says Peter
    Follow me

3.  Peter
Peter is saying
Peter is saying
“You are Christ;
Son of
Son of the living
Son of the living
Living God”

4. Peter
Peter denying
Peter denying
Knowing Christ
Jesus
Jesus forgiving
Dying and rising
From the Cross

Oh Jesus
You are Lord, You are God
You are Saviour, Friend
Jesus you love, forgive
You love, you live
I’ll follow you to the end!

4. Peter
Peter denying
Peter denying
Knowing Christ
Jesus
Jesus forgiving
Dying and rising
From the Cross

5. Peter
Peter goes fishing
Peter goes fishing
By the sea

Jesus says,”Peter”
Jesus says,”Peter
follow me”

6. Peter

Peter says, “Jesus
Yes, I do”
Jesus
Jesus says, “Peter
Feed my sheep now
Love them too
Love them too
Love them too!”

You are Lord, You are God
You are Saviour, Friend
Jesus you love, forgive
You love, you live
I’ll follow you to the end!

Peter says, “Jesus
Yes, I do”
Jesus
Jesus says, “Peter
Feed my sheep now
Love them too

Love you (song for the Cross)

Well,
having recently reflected that my songwriting over the decades has been “light on” with Good Friday /crucifixion/The Cross songs … I’ve just written a simple children’s song (though with possibly wider uses).  It’s called Love you.  Our local church kids club focusses on the crucifixion these next two Thursdays.  I’m sure that’s connected with the Spirit-initiative behind it all :-).  Backing track demo has been done somewhat hastily via Garage Band … excuse the roughness around the edges, folks.   Seems that’s surely OK for any song on this theme.  I’ve kept the basic song deliberately simple. See what you think.   I’ve got some simply, all-age friendly actions to accompany the singing if interested.

Blessings of this Lenten, Cross-reaching season.

score  mp3 vocal
 (in Em)
mp3 backing(with melody)

Jesus died on a cross for you
Jesus died on a cross for me
Jesus died on a cross for everyone
… because he loves us

Jesus died on a cross for you
Jesus died on a cross for me
Jesus died on a cross for everyone
… and there forgive us

Jesus died on a cross for you
Jesus died on a cross for me
Jesus died on a cross for everyone
… and we will love you
We will love you
We will love you
