deeper

waterHi!

As I’ve just blogged, there’s another song … which perhaps cheekily I’m putting out there. Along with others, I’ve been invited to write a song for a special gathering of Christians here in Australia later this year.  I won’t say any more about this right now.

There’s something about the imagery and meaning of Christian baptism; the reality that in this sacrament, we die to Christ, before rising (literally/spiritually) with Christ through the waters of baptism … renewed in God through Jesus Christ; gifted and empowered by the Spirit.

For me, through our continual engagement, in baptism, with Christ’s dying and rising that we journey deeper into the life of Christ; into God’s story.  As we do, we find our story … individually and as commissioned, gifted community in Christ. In our baptism, we are thus called and commissioned as disciples of Christ – to celebrate, sorrow, rejoice, serve, learn, seek justice and build community.  And that’s just a start.  Here’s the song.  Dale and I have put together a vocal demo … admittedly a bit dodgy here and there.  I hope you’ll look beyond (dare I say, deeper than) that.

There’s potential for a bit of an echo thing happening through all but the last line of the refrain.  That could work well … male/female,, alternating halves of congregation. song leader/congregation.

Grace and peace,
David

journey deeper

  1. In the seeking is the finding
In the learning we all gain
In the living is the growing
by your grace like morning rain
    In our gathering is Spirit
In our sorrow we all pain
In our worship we will hear your voice
    the call to life again
    So we journey
    Journey deeper
    Join your story
    Find your life
    God of loving
    God of promise
    We find our story
    *
    Shine your light
  2. Working arm-in-arm for justice
Finding Christ there in the least
    There with God’s refreshing Spirit
sharing faith and life and peace..

As community in Jesus
may we  journey as God calls
Through the wellspring of your mercy deep
We’ll rise as first we fall

So we journey …

“you are mine” … baptism song VOCAL

waterHi!

A few weeks now since, inspired by the gospel accounts of Jesus’ baptism, I wrote a baptismal song of my own – the lyric throughout the song being in the first-person of God addressing the one baptised.

Dale and I have finally – been offline for two days due to loss of power here in Brisbane – put together a vocal track (in the key of A) for the song.  Gives what I believe is a good feel for the song.

I was thrilled to hear of someone using the song at their child’s baptism this past weekend.

you are mine – baptism song score & backing

waterGreetings.

Back home a week from a delightful week at Hervey Bay. Back with access to my computer and musical gear; which means I’ve now done both a

… for my recently-written baptism song: You are mine.

Dale and I shared it last Sunday in worship (fairly hastily rehearsed, I might add) along with Gerry Holme’s M-M-M-Miracle … a marvellous kids song for anyone unpacking baptism with kids and families.  Both went well.

For what it’s worth, here are the lyrics in their final form.  It’s my deep prayer that this song will find use in worship services on baptism Sundays.  The reality is there does not seem to be much out there. If it is (great!!), but at least in my circles there’s a fairly small repertoire.  The backing eventually moves into a bit of country-tinged groove.  It works, in my totally-biased opinion, with a straight piano backing — along the lines of the intro and the opening chorus.

Keen to get feedback on this one. In the next week or so, Dale and I will hopefully organize a vocal track.

Blessings,
David

You are mine

“Child, I love you
Child, I claim you
I delight in you
For all time
In my gifting
In your belonging
Child, I love you and
you are mine”

“When you pass through the waters
I’ll be with you
When you walk through the fire
You won’t be burned
Do not fear
You are loved
I have redeemed you
I’m with you always
You are mine”

“Come, find life in fullness
in living water
In my dying, my rising
be renewed
Come, be welcomed
into my living body
My Spirit life and promise
born in you”

you are mine … baptism song

Hi
This Sunday’s readings give opportunity to not only give focus on Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan but also our own baptism.

So it is, while holidaying at beautiful Hervey Bay, Queensland, God’s led my reflecting on Luke 3:15-17, 21-22 and Isaiah 43:1-7 to the point where I’ve written this baptismal song: YOU ARE MINE. Quite intentionally … and drawing closely on scripture, the lyric has God addressing the ‘child’ being baptized. Perhaps the first time I’ve written such a lyric.

The writing of the song has presented its challenges -you see, I left my Mac (Logic software and all) at home. So – courtesy of the iPad AND some old-style rough manuscripting (last did this in 1990!) here it is. Rough and ready … absolutely. Back on deck next week, I’ll have a full piano score and vocal mp3. For now, think of something a bit folky with a slight country tinge. Contemporary baptismal songs for worship are scarce. I pray this one finds some use and blessing.
