you are planted

seed_sprouting_growth_with_dew_dropsHi

Just back from our annual Church Camp – at Luther Heights campsite at Coolum, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.  A weekend well-spent in Christian community.  My colleague Ken helped us explore the theme: God grows us where we are planted. We used Louie Giglio’s Symphony presentation and also The Tale of Three Trees in this exploration.

I did something unusual for me. Apart from bringing some song booklets, I quite deliberately did not do any advance Sunday camp worship planning.  Yesterday, as we were encouraged to share in a particular craft activity, I struggled with how best to respond to Ken’s invitation.  I guess, I was keen not only to unpack the sense that we are wonders of God’s creation, each unique; but also to personally reflect on what it means to grow where God has called and placed me in ministry.   What does it mean to grow … I kept pondering. Tried writing a song … too forced.

Then … as I was heading to my evening slumber, I reflected how it would be good to begin Sunday’s camp worship with something akin to the old-fashioned ‘charge’ – as someone is commissioned for ministry.

The phrase: You are called kept coming to me as I lay down for the night. Surprisingly I slept and not-surprisingly (for that’s how I’ve often sensed God’s hand in things), this phrase and the words which were to follow started rolling off my iPad keyboard and fingers upon rising.  I was keen to inject a sense … remembering this was the church family camping together … of We are called.  So I did.

I offer this to you.  Perhaps you can use in somewhere, sometime.

You are planted
Planted with promise
Planted with hope
Planted with love
With all the potential
God has invested in you
For God is love

You are planted
Planted
enriched by the gifting;
the gifting God’s Spirit
has infused in you
Gifting that helps grow each other
gifting to shared in building
a brighter, more peaceful world
a world in harmony with God
Gifting that points
to the hand of the Creator
that gives glory to God
God who is love

You are planted
Planted for a purpose –
many purposes:
To love
To grow
To be fruitful
To praise
To take in every bit of goodness,
life and light
the Creator promises to pour into you
God who is love

You are planted
Planted,
depending on God who is life
Apart from God
you ultimately can do nothing
so, we abide in God
In God we live
and move
and grow
and have our being, in
God who is love

We are planted
Planted as community in Christ
Commanded not only to grow
but commanded to love
God and neighbour 24/7
Planted – to share God’s economy
in which we each are gift
in which we each grow
learning … living …
blessing … respecting
enriching … blessing one another
as chosen people
as called people
as saved people
as planted people
as people of God:
yesterday, today, forever, in
God who is love
Lord,
as planted people
we want to grow
We want your life – life overflowing
We want to make a difference
We want to be the people
you call;
you plant us to be
Wherever
Whenever
However, with
whoever

Tending God,
send our tender,
struggling shoots Godwards
deep into your kingdom life
God,
our life growing in you
i
n you …
God …
love

we abide in you … with voice

Hi!  Dale and I worked on a vocal track for my  We abide in you worship song today. Check it out!  David

we abide in you … some more

by Craig Mitchell. Feel free to use for non-commercial purposes.

Hi,

Done some small adapting on my We abide in you song posted yesterday.

Felt there needed to be some acknowledgement of the “vine and branches” metaphor with a title like We abide in you, so I’ve changed some lyrics in the chorus.  The melody has also changed in minor ways since Draft A. The full song lyric now goes like this.  David.

we abide in you       music score

In you our life is found
In you our hope abounds
You cleanse us by your word
etched deep within
apart from you, O Lord
it all amounts to naught
In you, O God
we live and move and be

We pray we stay united with you
We pray we stay united with you

So we abide in you
Lord we abide in you
We, branches to the vine
dwell in your love
So we abide in you
Lord we abide in you
In you is life and hope and love

God prune us
where you will
We long to serve you still
To bear much fruit
so you be glorified
Your word to fill us deep
in us, your hands, your feet
We grow in you
Disciples by your love

We pray we stay united with you
We pray we stay united with you

So we abide in you …

we abide in you

Hi

Amazing the circumstances and context behind some songs I believe God leads me to write. Here I am sitting in McDonalds. I’ve just given blood as part 2 of my yearly checkup and having fasted the previous 13 hours; that’s right – no food, and especially no coffee! Yes; it does and can happen!

I’ve done some initial reflection on this Sunday’s “vine and branches” John 15:1-8 gospel reading; but songwriting is not on radar.  On a few days off last week, while sitting by beautiful Trinity Beach at Cairns, Queensland, Australia I’d written what is emerging as an upbeat Pentecost song – for a latter posting.  Haven’t even manuscripted on settled on lyrics for that.

Meanwhile, munching on a McMuffin at Maccas (yes, I love alliteration), this notion of “abiding” comes to me. Not the sort of ‘abide’ which is all about ‘abiding by the umpire’s decision’ whether we like it or not. No, the sense of ‘abiding’ connoting our ‘dwelling’ in; finding our source and strength and solace and ultimately life.

That John 15:1-8 passage is so laden (partly excuse the pun) with meaning and metaphor; like – when one recalls that our abiding in Christ is for the purpose of being fruitful!   Easy to forget that bit.

My other very unformed piece of reflection – and coming out of the context of having jist given blood is the understanding that blood was traditionally equated with life.  If in someone the blood was contaminated or too much was lost or it ceased to flow; life was endangered.  As you can tell, some more reflecting to go here.

So … here it is … we abide in you.  A simple, reflective worship song with a short bridge thing in there too – not common for me in my songwriting.  See what you think. Expect at least a backing track on/before Thursday.

Shalom,

David
