USA 2014 … the road trip has begun … as has the jetlag

I type this from the lobby of the Comfort Suites, a nice 3.5 star motel in Fredericksburg, Virginia, USA. It’s just after 6 on a Monday morning. By early afternoon we’ll have completed a further 4 hours of driving and arrived at Kitty Hawk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It’s apparently where my fishing “”prowess”” comes to the fore!

Have to say we’re yet to crack a normal night’s sleep: Friday night we get to bed around midnight after long flight. Saturday night – well, jetlag/body clock realities have kicked in by then. By this I mean, getting up at 1 am and ‘delighting’ in instant decaf coffee with coffee creamer and some Splenda, supplemented by a peanut butter sandwich. Sounding good?! Dale’s in the same boat, I hasten to add.

Last night, we thought we’d go one better, so we somehow wake at 11.30 and begin our motel lobby sits, armed with more decaf coffee. Must say it was preceded by our obligatory USA visit to the Old Cracker Barrel Store and then a wonderful, wonderful swim at the motel.

The flight over – well it was longer than usual – no, nothing wrong with the plane or airline (Qantas). Qantas these days flies also into Dallas-Forth Worth, so this adds an extra couple of hours to the big leg. The American Airlines lounge at Dallas sure was nice, especially the shower.

Saturday, we enjoyed breakfast with Diana and Tom, Dale’s sister and brother-in-law; vegged around for much of the rest of the day trying to stay awake (I foolishly took an 11 am nap!) and enjoyed a lovely Mexican meal in Niles, Ohio at Plaza Azteca, complete with realtime guacamole making and mariachi band.

Yesterday (Sunday), Dale, Dad and I head off – first night sTop at Fredericksburg, site of a major civil war battle back in 1862. Coincidentally, I had (again) watched the movie Lincoln on the plane. One of Spielberg’s best.

Dad and I shared the driving. A good thing. We drove through some lovely Pennsylvanian and Virginian countryside. It’s early autumn here, and the various yellows and oranges and Browns are beginning to emerge on the leaves, Lovely … though I flogged the photo off the net!

Looking forward to our few days at the Outer Banks.
Stay tuned.
