Icy Strait Point

Icy Strait Point is the location of Hoonah, a Tlingit fishing village up in the coastal wilds of Alaska – just 500 people live there … in the middle of nowhere.

I remember one of my favourite singers John Denver many years ago singing songs of not only Colorado but Alaska. He shared his sense of its overwhelming beauty. I’m getting a glimpse of why.

It was great to see the fog & cloud lifting as we headed up the passage toward Icy Strait Point. It was utterly pleasurable, armed with freshly-cooked burger and deck, and sitting on a sun-soaked deck taking in the scenery.

We were tendered (think lifeboat) around 4 pm to a landing at Icy Strait where we firstly embarked o a tram ride through Alaskan forest before emerging at a stony beach with marvellous vistas across the water. A highlight was not only spotting bald eagles high in the trees, but watching one fly majestically from its perch into the sky.

After this we enjoyed an hour-long Tlingit Tribal song, dance and legend-telling presentation – costumes and all. They even got us all up at various times dancing tribally. A lot of integrity about the show and must respect shown to Tlingit tradition.

Back at the ship, we’ve enjoyed some nice dessert, before taking the Eagles tribute band around supper time. Saw the Eagles about 8 years ago … they were superb, so this one will be interesting.

Tomorrow we head further north to Hubbard Glacier – can’t wait!

Cheers,
David
