healer of hearts

This Sunday at two of our worship services, we’ll be having Services of Prayer for Healing.  With these, we’ll adapt resources from the Iona Community.  I resonate with their perspectives on this:

  • our prime responsibility as Christians with this is to be faithful in prayer.  God will be God and in God’s way and timing, healing will come.  We do know that God is God of hope, compassion and wholeness
  • the ministry of prayer for healing is a calling to the whole community of faith.  That’s why the whole congregation, in ways each person finds comfortable, will have opportunity to be part of things
  • God offers healing of body, mind and spirit – whether this be individidually OR within relationships, groups, communities, nations.

Yesterday, I worked much of the day on the services for Sunday and my sermon.  This of course included music choices.  I definitely want to use John Bell and Graham Maule’s We cannot measure how you heal.  (scroll through the link – it’s there).

However, I wanted to share more personally in song – with some inspiration and encouragement coming also from the wonderful verses in Psalm 61. Healer of hearts is the outcome.  Here are the lyrics, with leadsheet here – hot of the presses.

See what you think.

healer of hearts

You’re the healer of hearts
when we’re opened wide
You’re the healer of hurts
when we’re pained inside
You’re the healer of body, mind and soul
Jesus, bring us your life
Come, make us/me whole

Hear my cry, O God,my prayer
From the heart in deep despair
When I’m far from anywhere
Let me know that God, you’re there

You’re the healer of hearts …

Keep me safe from harm’s cruel way
You’re my refuge, come what may
God in you: my life, my way
In your presence night and day

You’re the healer of hearts …
