create in me … a leadsheet (& revised lyrics)

Folks

Been away at church camp all weekend, but I thought you’d like to have a copy of the leadsheet (basic)  for my setting of Create in me a clean heart, from Psalm 51.
Revised lyrics:

Create in me a clean heart

Create … in me a clean heart
Create … in me a clean heart
Create … in me a clean heart
and renew a right spirit in me

Chase me not away from you, God
and take your Spirit never from me
Restore to me the joy of your salvation
sustain a willing spirit deep in me

Create … in me a clean heart …

Help me, Lord to speak and I will praise you
Off’rings, sacrifice you don’t desire
It pleases you: a heart that knows repentance
The kind of sacrifice you, God require

create in me a clean heart

Hi!

Amid everything else that’s been happening in our family life this weekend – and with Ash Wednesday just 3 days off – I’ve written a new setting of some of the key verses of Psalm 51.  I’m really happy with it!  (“OK, you say that about all your songs, David!”.) Well, I am a hard critic of myself.  Currently I’m away at our church camp at beautiful Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast, Australia; so I won’t be able to offer leadsheet at least until this evening.  Stay tuned.

For now, here are some lyrics:

Create … in me a clean heart
(Create in me, in me a clean heart)
Create … in me a clean heart
(Create in me, in me a clean heart)
Create … in me a clean heart
(Create in me, in me a clean heart)
and renew a right spirit within me

Chase me not away from you, God
and take your holy spirit not away from me
Restore to me the joy of your salvation
sustain a willing spirit deep in me

Create … in me a clean heart
Create … in me a clean heart
Create … in me a clean heart
and renew a right spirit within me

Help me, Lord to speak and I will praise you
Off’rings, sacrifices you don’t choose
It pleases you when sorrow wells deep in us
[It pleases you:  a heart that knows repentance]
The kind of sacrifice you won’t refuse

Create … in me a clean heart
Create … in me a clean heart
Create … in me a clean heart
and renew a right spirit within me

songs that unite … a breakthrough

I’ve blogged previously about SONGS THAT UNITE – the inaugural songwriting competiition of the Uniting Church in Australia – an attempt (all other issues aside, and many of them are major ones) to broaden the contemporary worship song repertoire of UC congregations.  Certainly beyond the varying narrow diets of Hillsong, Planet Shakers, and to a lesser (in some cases much lesser) extent – Tomlin, Redman, Townend etc.

Some weeks ago, I blogged about my dilemma in not knowing which songs to submit for the competition.  Only allowed three. A recent recording with Dale of  You love us well convinces me that that song needs to be in there somewhere.

A stumbling block had been the restriction of handing all copyright song ownership over to the Assembly.  Not good at all.  Who would want to hand over some of their best songs to someone else for the term of their natural life.  Good news – as of this morning, it’s like this …

Important changes to the conditions for entry in the “Songs that Unite” Competition.Print
Thursday, 04 February 2010 12:15
Since issuing the conditions for entry in the “Songs that Unite” competition the Assembly has received feedback that suggests that the requirement that contest winners effectively sell their copyright to the Assembly has affected the willingness of some writers to enter the competition. This is not an outcome that the Assembly desires as the goal of the competition is to encourage awareness of the work of Christian musicians and to assist in making their work available.

In response to the feedback received the Assembly is removing the requirement that successful entrants must pass the copyright to the Assembly. All entries received prior to this change of condition will be subject to the revised terms of entry.

So – if you’re a songwriter out there, go to the webpage, check it out and start writing!
